MEET JON MATEER: GAME MASTER, BARDTENDER AND FRIEND OF THE FAM

MEET JON MATEER: GAME MASTER, BARDTENDER AND FRIEND OF THE FAM

What do you have listed for your 'Class' and 'Background' on your current character sheet?

I’m currently the Game Master for campaign two of the Bardtenders Podcast, so I luckily get to play all of the characters! In our first campaign, I played as Alistair TrenchScale—a Triton Paladin who took an Oath of the Open Sea! Truly one of my favorite characters I have ever played!

What is the origin story of the Bardtenders podcast?

Bardtenders was born during the COVID-19 pandemic. As bartenders, we’re all incredibly social human beings and we lost our chance to connect with everyone on a daily basis. So, we started playing table top games virtually online to share stories, laugh, and roll some dice with our closest friends. Along the way (and maybe with a glass or three of whiskey), we started talking about how amazing it would be to play as bartenders in a fantasy game setting. With some great memories, horrible puns, and even more dice rolling… Bardtenders was born! We were able to set aside our shakers and exchange them for dice at the table!

How do you approach the alchemy of blending spirits with storytelling when crafting adventures within the Quest’s End universe?

I fully believe that bartending is one of the coolest jobs in the entire world. Every day is its own adventure with new creations and amazing people—you truly never know who will walk through the door!  If you’ve spent any time rolling dice in a table top game… then you know the exact same things happen. Players come up with incredible moments through collaborative story telling the same way that bartenders put together cocktails. When you combine the two, it’s a winning recipe. Every bottle of alcohol on the backbar tells its own story, from the minute the grain is harvested to the moment it gets placed into a bottle for us to drink at home or at the bar.  Quest’s End Whiskey has the added bonus of bringing our favorite Dungeons & Dragons characters, classes, and monsters to life in liquor form. We combine all of these elements together into one epic adventure for everyone to enjoy!

Looking back at our collaborations, what is one specific moment or "Natural 20" that stands out as truly legendary?

My absolute favorite moment to date was during the Quest’s End Whiskey Monk release party at Manifest Distillery. We created a custom one-shot adventure based on the Monks of the Blistering Fist. The monks’ temple was located on the side of a volcano and so they naturally paid homage to the fire and flame inside the temple. There was a player who became inspired by the monks’ passions for the flame and cast the spell Burning Hands on the massive crest featuring the monks’ holy symbol in the middle of the monastery. How cool is that! How can you not reward an amazing moment like that as a Game Master? The volcano began to shake, lava began to flow through metal grates on the floor below, the sconces in the walls shone brighter and… the player unlocked a flashback scene lore drop, gained some inspiration, and we even had a magical chest appear in an alcove with legendary loot. We love to empower the rule of cool at the table!

What new territories or high-level quests are appearing on the map next for you and Bardtenders?

We’re currently in the middle of our second campaign, but we’re always having fun creating one-shot adventures and playing other table top games on our podcast.

We’re also about to launch our first-ever cocktail book coming out later in 2026 and we’re incredibly excited about it! We also began working on our first Dungeons & Dragons adventure manual with a bartending spin on it. We’re excited to bring the games we’ve been playing on the podcast to our fans’ tables at home!

Outside of that, we just started planning a renaissance festival for Jacksonville in the summer of 2027!  Be on the lookout for more information soon!
