Just beneath the surface, a hint of mojito mint rises for a mildly cooling finish.

Set in 1882, “Hell Is Not Mocked” is a tale of blood, dust, and above all, vengeance. Written by best-selling author Christopher Buehlman, whose horror and dark fantasy tales include The Blacktongue Thief, Between Two Fires, Those Across the River, this Western Gothic takes you on a journey through fear that lurks in the unknowable.

The original artwork for “Hell Is Not Mocked” was created by John Brosio, a classically trained painter who captures the kinds of storms that rip through the sky and through the mind. Brosio is known for bringing the apocalyptic into the ordinary: tornadoes swallowing suburbs, monsters looming over strip malls, dread stitched into the everyday. This piece channels that same uneasy electricity: a Western horizon about to break, and something terrible riding the wind.
