Our First Macabre Spirits Auteur: The Legendary Mike Flanagan
How did your collaboration with Macabre Spirits begin?
I was surprised and honored when Matt invited me to contribute a story for Macabre Spirits. We had just worked together on a movie and a web series, so I knew I loved working with him, but I’d never really done anything like this before. I personally stopped drinking alcohol years ago (just because that is what was best for me), but have never begrudged anyone else their libations. I’ve always admired a finely crafted spirit, and knew immediately this was going to be an incredibly cool project. I was an enthusiastic “yes” right away.
This is your first published work of fiction. What was the writing process like?
I sat down to a blank page without really knowing where it would take me, and what a spectacular journey it turned out to be. The story took on a life of its own. I’ve heard people say that before, but it truly, actually did, it’s not hyperbole – and I was just along for the ride.
So you were pleased with how Rare, Fine & Limited turned out?
It’s one of my favorite stories I’ve ever gotten to tell. It surprised, delighted, and horrified me in equal measure. I never expected it to have such a hold on me, and I’m so grateful that Macabre Spirits lit this spark.
What was it like to work with Matthew Lillard on a non-film project?
Knowing that my little story is a part of such other artistry – from the beautiful bottle, adorned with such wonderfully macabre artwork, to the finely realized liquor within – I’m just thrilled to have been a part of it. Matthew and his partners are kind, creative, fascinating people, and it was a pleasure to be part of the launch of their endeavor. I hope it’s the first of many. Not only many collaborations with Matthew and his team, but the first of many novellas and short stories as well.
Any parting words?
I had a fucking blast.
