The Company We Keep: Karen Wang, Dispel Dice

How did you design the Dragon Bones Dice Set for Quest’s End?
This set is based on the Dragon bottle – a beautiful one indeed! Our designer illustrates all of the designs that go on the dice, then we experiment until we get the colors and inks just right. We probably went through 20–30 different iterations, and that's just the design phase! In production, each set of resin dice has to be hand poured twice, painted, hand sanded and polished to preserve the sharp edges that give it this premium look.

How did you get started making dice?
I had a late start playing Dungeons & Dragons – I began in 2018. I was going through an incredibly difficult time where I was struggling with depression and a lack of direction in my life, but I had a persistent friend that continued to ask me no matter how many times I refused. Eventually, I got myself to show up and played my first game of Dungeons & Dragons.

For the first time in a very long time, I found myself having fun. The community and friendships forged in that particular game really saved my life, and piqued my interest in creating something for the space. Naturally, I gravitated towards the thing that I enjoyed collecting the most: dice.

What’s your favorite character class to play?
My favorite class has yet to be released as a Quest’s End character, and I am waiting with bated breath! I almost always play a wizard – sometimes to my party's detriment if I do not make the decision to take the evocation subclass. Right now, I am playing a retired grandma cassowary-inspired Aarakocra wizard that's trying to navigate the political machinations of Barovia.
